The final part of Chapter One…
Alerted by the heavy panting sound, Phillip turned around just in time to see his wife hurtling towards him, blanket stretched out as if trying to corner and catch a small pig. A gasp came from one of them, he wasn’t sure who made the sound as she wrapped the throw around his tummy and covered his minor indiscretion.
“Imagine if Louise from next door saw you! You’d be all over the street WhatsApp by now. For Christ’s sake Phillip keep your penis to yourself.”
She let out a large sigh, almost a weep, and thought to herself – this does not bode well for the rest of the day.
“I um..” was all Phillip managed to say as he slowly made his way back down to the house. But Judi-with-an-I just raised a hand to stop him and made her way back to bed.
Phillip made his way to the kitchen. He got a small cup from the cupboard and placed it on the coffee machine pressing the button to make her double espresso. He didn’t know if he could face his wife sliding up the headboard like a giant slug to take her morning drink. Let alone have to kiss her cheek another time.
He glanced over at the sink and saw the shattered cup. He tutted.
He looked at the window and saw the brown streaks of coffee that had run down. He tutted.
The throw fell to the floor. It felt like a final straw.
Two minutes later with no more than the socks he wore, his wallet and car key, Phillip was driving away from his home. He flicked a switch on the dashboard and gave a little smile as the seat slowly warmed up under him.
Over a hundred miles later he found himself sitting in the car staring at the sea. He was thankful for his warm buttocks, but was aware he needed some clothes if he was going to get out of the car and walk down to the lapping waves of water. He didn’t want to draw any unnecessary attention to himself. That would not be a good idea.
For twenty-three years Phillip had been pressing that button at the pedestrian crossing. Biding himself more time. Today though, for some unknown reason, he was running for the bus.
His heart started racing.
And then he had a good idea.
What do you think so far?
